1960年代，沿海某地。杨桂香（张小玲 饰）是百货公司五金柜台的营业员，平日里就看不起这份伺候人的工作。这天临下班，无线电行的周金山（达式常 饰）受人之托来买门锁，并且要在台风赶来之前到生产队安喇叭，由于急着下班看电影，杨桂香服务态度相当冷淡。杨的同学刘芳（史淑桂 饰）是某厂团干部，她对杨的不健康思想进行了委婉的批评。杨正林（冯奇 饰）得知女儿瞧不起营业员工作，心中隐隐作痛。他是个站了一辈子柜台的老店员，旧社会受尽了有钱人的歧视，解放后才挺起腰杆子，如今光荣退休，每月拿着政府发给的养老金，他决心用新旧社会对比来教育女儿。次日，杨桂香调到鞋帽组，师傅韩仲林（魏鹤龄 饰）针对桂香的内心波动，用实际行动影响教育着她......。After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul (Andrew Sensenig) and Anne (Barbara Crampton) move to the quiet New England countryside to try to start a new life for themselves.
